She's a Material Girl

If the world was full of Sarah Stoutes, then it would be a happy place indeed. Tucked neatly away in a romantic courtyard behind Portofino is Sarah’s business Devonport Alterations & Dry Cleaning, and there, in her two years, she has grown a reputation for excellent seam work, detailed garment design, and skilled dressmaking.

“I have done everything from suit alterations and wedding dress changes to sewing sails for local boats getting primed for summer days spent on the sea.” Sarah enjoys the challenge of restoring vintage garments; breathing new life into hand sewn kimonos and re-threading beaded ball dresses, but it’s dress making that makes her and her machine truly sing, “I love designing from start to finish. Design, pattern making, fabric choice, sewing, and seeing the finished product on the customer – that’s the best moment of all.”

In addition to her alterations she also runs an eco-friendly dry-cleaning service which is handy for morning commuters who wish to drop off and collect their garments to and from work.

Originally from South Africa, Sarah found her way to New Zealand, and when catching up with her uncle Peter from Devonport Optometrists, she saw the opportunity to open up her own business nearby. Her joyful and friendly nature, coupled with her skilled threadwork, has earned her a solid reputation for excellence.
