Devonport is a fantastic destination for walking and cycling with a range of options that lead you to our volcanic cones, down streets lined with heritage houses or following our popular Arts Trail through our more gritty urban corridors. Below are a range of self-led walks or cycle tours you can enjoy, or if you prefer, E-bike or Segway can be hired from the ferry terminal, or you can take it in by guided coach with Devonport Tours.
Devonport to Takapuna on the Green Route
This Walking and Cycling route can been enjoyed by the whole family. Cycling will take approximately 40 minutes, starting at Devonport and finishing near Takapuna beach.
The journey includes paths, boardwalks and bridges weaving through parks, mangroves, and heritage streets. Along the way find a nautical-themed playground at Northboro Reserve, look for eels among the mangroves, and delve into North Shore’s history at its oldest cemetery founded in 1891.
Cycle the Seabreeze & Devonport History
It's free to bring your bikes across on the ferry and there's a fantastic little cycle loop that takes you via Cheltenham Beach and Narrow Neck to Belmont. Return via Bayswater, through Northboro Reserve and Ngataringa Park.
Devonport Heritage - Cheltenham to Fort Takapuna
Starting from Torpedo Bay this walk highlights some of Devonport's late Victorian and Edwardian homes, as well as commercial buildings, memorials and sites of important events. An optional walk up Maungauika/North Head can be included.
Devonport Heritage - Our Neighbourhood
This wander through established residential streets highlights first homes of early Devonport residents, as well as the first power station, the Takarunga/Mount Victoria cemetery and some of the early churches. The Devonport Museum and walk to the summit of Takarunga/Mount Victoria could be included.
Devonport Heritage - Victoria Road - Town Centre
The walk along Victoria Road features many late Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings at the heart of the town centre, including The Vic, the oldest surviving purpose built cinema in the Southern Hemisphere. An optional walk up to the summit of Takarunga/Mount Victoria could be included.
Devonport Heritage - Waterfront
The walk from King Edward Parade to Torpedo Bay highlights some of Devonport's late Victorian and Edwardian homes, as well as early commercial buildings, memorials and sites of important events. An optional walk up Mount Maungauika/North Head could be included.
Devonport Arts Festival Residential Art Trail
The Devonport Arts Festival is a locally produced art event that first began in the 50s. Now with a vision to offering free art experiences for all, the Trust has commissioned the painting of 22 public murals that takes visitors on a self-led journey through Devonport Village, around Cheltenham Beach and Vauxhall Shops.
