Wakatere Boating Club Centenary Weekend – 100 Years on the Water
Friday 27 February – Sunday 1 March 2026 | Wakatere Boating Club - Narrow Neck Beach, Devonport
Heritage Race Day - Saturday 28 February | 12.30pm briefing | 1.30pm race start
One of Devonport’s longest-running clubs, Wakatere Boating Club, is celebrating 100 years of sailing, community and volunteer spirit with a special centenary weekend.
Founded in 1926 by just 21 members on the shores of Narrow Neck Beach, Wakatere has grown into a thriving sailing hub, producing national and international champions while introducing generations of local families to the sport.
A highlight of the weekend will be Saturday’s Heritage Race Day, run from the club’s historic Memorial Starting Tower. For this centenary race, the tower will be brought back into service, with sailors lining up for a traditional Le Mans–style beach start — a colourful nod to the club’s early racing traditions. The public is warmly encouraged to come down to the beach and watch the action.
The weekend also marks the launch of Wakatere 100, a commemorative book capturing the people, stories and moments that have shaped the club over the past century.

The Devonport Business Association is here to support and strengthen our local business community. Below is a selection of recent events and initiatives we’ve led or supported – all designed to drive foot traffic, boost visibility, and create meaningful connections between businesses and the wider community.
Matariki Star Trail 2025
In June and July, the Devonport Business Association celebrated Matariki with a village-wide Star Trail. Maps were available from the Devonport Library and Community House, and locals explored shops to find all nine Matariki whetū (stars) displayed in windows. Each star’s meaning was shared, and participants went in the draw to win a $200 Prezzy Card.
The village was also lit up with lanterns and LED lights to mark the season. Entries closed Sunday 30 June.
Art Battle Devonport – A Creative First for the Village
On Thursday 1 May, the Devonport Ferry Terminal transformed into a buzzing hub of live creativity as we hosted Devonport’s first-ever Art Battle – proudly supported by the Devonport Business Association.
Over 300 people attended throughout the evening, enjoying three fast-paced rounds of live painting where 12 artists battled it out on canvas. With the crowd voting live from their phones, the energy was high, the competition fierce, and the creativity unstoppable.
This free, all-ages, community-sponsored event brought together locals and visitors for a vibrant night of art, music, giveaways, and great vibes. All artwork was sold in a silent auction, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the artists – a meaningful way to support Aotearoa’s creative talent.
Art Battle Devonport was part of First Thursdays Devonport, a monthly late-night celebration of creativity throughout the village, featuring galleries, exhibitions, live music, and more.
It was an unforgettable night for the Devonport community – and just the beginning of what’s to come.
